Summer Trips: Antigua

As summer nears an end we’re taking a look back at the trips we took this year. First up is Antigua!

Royalton Antigua

We took a beautiful getaway to Antigua, the island of sun and sea. The island was friendly and alive during the Carnival Festival season, which lasts an entire week!

Admirals Inn

The trip was nothing short of amazing as we got to bask in the sun and take in a bit of the festivities. While getting to Antigua is no small feat as many airlines don’t have multiple flights a day to the island. But once you make the journey there you’ll never want to leave paradise.

The majority of our stay was at the Royalton Antigua, a lovely resort in the heart of St. Johns. It’s an easy ride to the airport. The resort is a small resort with 1 main building with rooms facing the mountain ( Mountain View) or the bay ( Bay View). The view from the Mountain View rooms is not at all appealing but they do offer a honeymooning couple some privacy as it’s a bit secluded and quiet from the resort’s main walkway. The Bay View will most likely have more noise as that’s where most of the traffic on the resort occurs. If you want an extra special stay try one of their 6 Overwater Bungalows, located at the farthest end of the resort replete with glass bottom floors and beach hammock.

When it comes to food we only tried the main buffet every day and it never got boring. The food was good all throughout our stay.

Our favorite stay by far was the Admiral’s Inn around Nelson’s Dockyard. It is a bit of a drive from the airport to the inn but once you arrive it’s well worth the ride. The rooms at this boutique hotel take you back to the turn of the 19th century with a touch of modernity added to make today’s guest feel at home. Each room is unique but they all have the amenities that we can’t live without such as wifi and most have a renovated bathroom.. The beautiful inn is built around the pillars of an old fort and has rooms on both sides of the bay. We chose to stay on the main island as that is where you will have breakfast. You’ll want to go to the other side and take a dip in the pool and their boat will ferry you across the bay.

If you’re looking to plan your trip to Antigua keep in mind October to May is their high season. While we went for Carnival, you could still find rooms on the island at reasonable prices. If you’re looking for more cultural activities to do try taking a cooking class or set off on a hike to view the beauty of the island
